Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, schools have played a central role in Zurich’s urban development. As a result of a series of laws and construction programmes, schools became important public infrastructures in all new urban neighbourhoods. Today, school complexes in Zurich act as civic forums within a polycentric city, accommodating a wide range of activities beyond education, including leisure, sports and family gatherings.
This tour with exhibition curator and urban design historian Tom Avermaete explores how schools and school grounds have played a fundamental role in shaping the city and providing public spaces for everyday neighbourhood life since the 19th century. It also examines how strategies of ‘school provisoria’ have been implemented under recent demographic pressures, shedding new light on the public role of schools.
The tour will take place in English. All projects will be viewed from the street or publicly accessible areas only. By registration only, group restricted to 20 people. Registration at anmeldung [at] zaz-bellerive.ch
